Thanjavur District

Thanjavur District is one of the 32 districts of the state of Tamil Nadu, in southeastern India. Its headquarters is Thanjavur.
It had a population of 2,216,138 as of 2001. It is 33.78% urbanised. The district has a literacy rate of 75.45%, 10.51% above the average for the state.
The Thanjavur district comprised the heartland of the Chola Empire and as a result, was an important centre of Brahminism. The Imperial Gazetteer of India 1908 lists Thanjavur, along with the South Canara and Ganjam districts, as the three districts of the Madras Presidency where Brahmins are most numerous.




Geography

The district is in Central Tamil Nadu bounded on the northeast by Nagapattinam District, on the east by Tiruvarur District, on the south by the Palk Strait,of Bay of Bengal on the west by Pudukkottai District, and on the north by the river Kollidam, across which lie Tiruchirappalli and Perambalur districts.

Agriculture

This district lies at the Kaveri delta region, the most fertile region in the state.[1] The district is the main Rice producing region in the state and hence known as the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu. Kaveri River and its tributaries irrigate the district. Apart from paddy, farmers here grow Coconut and Sugarcane and it is the largest producer of Coconut in Tamil Nadu.

Tourism

Brihadeeswara Temple, built by the Cholas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site is located at Thanjavur. The green paddy fields and the Kaveri river provide for picturuesque spots in the district.

Santhome Cathedral Basilica Chennai

Santhome Cathedral Basilica ChennaiSince the colonial period, Chennai is the home for thousands of Christians. The rich Christian tradition and culture is very well reflected in their places of worship, Churches. Chennai city is proud of its churches and their unique architecture. Here is a short summary of all the prominent churches of Chennai.

St. Mary's Church

St. Mary's Church is the first Anglican Church in India. It was built in 1678-79 in Fort St. George. The original rectangular building was about 60 ft. by 90 ft. Its outer walls were 4 ft thick and its roof 2 ft. thick and bomb proof. The treasures of St. Mary's Church are the altarpiece, a large painting of the last supper, a 1660 bible and silver plates.

Santhome Basilica

The Santhome Basilica church is located on the southern end of Marina Beach. A rare church, raised on the tomb of St. Thomas, an apostle of Christ, it has in its possession a small hand bone of Thomas and the head of a lance, which brought him down. Renovated in the early 1970s, this Basilica draws huge crowds. There is a beautiful stained glass window at the basilica, which portrays the story of St. Thomas, and the central hall has 14 wooden plaques depicting scenes from the last days of Christ. In the cathedral is a 3ft. high statue of Virgin Mary, which was brought from Portugal in 1543.

Velankanni Church

This church in Elliot's Beach is in honor of Our Lady of Health, the Madonna of Velankanni. Smaller in scale than the original one at Velankanni (near Nagapattinam) the devoted believe in the miraculous curative powers of the Madonna.

The Armenian Church

The Armenian Church was built in 1772, on the site of the Armenian cemetery, The Armenian Church houses a magnificent belfry - 6 bells, claimed to be the largest bells in Chennai.

C.S.I. Holy Cross Church

The C.S.I. Holy Cross Church is more than 120 years old. It was originally called the Perambur Railway Church, when it was under the railway authorities. The C.S.I. Holy Cross Church earlier had a predominantly Anglo-Indian congregation though now there are also families from other southern states.

Our Lady of Snows Church

People inhabited Kallikulam as early as 1700. They built a temple to a Hindu deity for worship. Some time after, a lady with her child in her one arm and holding silver stick on the other hand, frequently came in the dream of the village leader and asked a particular part of land at Kallikulam. St. Thomas Mount

Legend has it that Thomas, an apostle of Christ, preached atop the hill here. He is said to have been killed on this 300 ft. high mount. The paintings of 'The Holy Lady and The Child' and 'Our Lady of Expectations' exhibited in the St. Thomas church are believed to have been done by St. Thomas.

St. Andrews Church

Known as "the Queen of Scottish Churches in the East", the St. Andrews Church has finely etched white Doric columns, black and white tiled marble roof, and a high, sky-blue dome of enviable beauty. On the inner surface of the dome, constellations of stars, as they can be viewed in Scotland, are painted realistically.

St. George's Cathedral

The St. George's Cathedral was built in 1815. It has a towering 45m spire and ionic columns. The highlight of this Cathedral is the graveyard just adjacent to it with its guardrail made up of war emblems - muskets, bayonets etc. of the capture of Srirangapatnam in 1799.

Descanso

Lying amidst the cultural and religious center of Mylapore on St. Mary's Road, this 17th century church is said to have been the place where St. Thomas took rest and also served the people.

CB-CID to tighten screws on FI

CHENNAI: Following complaints on private financial institutions, the CB-CID will request the Tamil Nadu government to make it mandatory that such institutions should get an NOC from the CB-CID before launching a company, G Thilagavathy, ADGP, Economic Offences Wing (EOW), said here on Friday.The CB-CID will also request the government to grant them authority to audit the existing institutions every three months. The EOW has registered 44 cases of frauds by financial institutions and recovered Rs 67.57 crore.Providing details about their latest hunt on fraudulent financial institutions, the ADGP said the EOW arrested five persons from Valasarvakkam in Chennai, Virudhunagar and Vellore.Real King Marketing at Valsaravakkam had 4,000 depositors, who were cheated to the tune of Rs 40 crore. Four people involved in the fraud, Gunalan, Raja Yesupatham, Tamilselvi and Santhosh Kumar, are absconding.Gold Power Marketing located at Vignesh Colony, Virudhunagar, was started in August 2009. They lured people into investing Rs 5,000 and the company received Rs 50 crore out of which they did not return Rs 18.98 crore. Based on the complaints the EOW received, Vijayakumar, Srinivasan, and Sokkammal were arrested.The police are on the look out for one Jansirani.A chit fund at Vellore, Kings Star Mercantile, which was started in 2008 had cheated Rs 11.30 crore.A total of 2,734 people had deposited in the chit fund.The managing director of the company, Sreenivasan, and his partner Palanisamy were arrested.
